Seven Questions to Ask Before Changing Careers in Nigeria
Leadership insightRead. Reflect. Apply.

A change of direction deserves research, not a leap built only on frustration. For Nigerian professionals, founders and organisational leaders, the most useful response is a practical combination of reflection and action.

Start with the actual problem

A change of direction deserves research, not a leap built only on frustration. Examine financial runway, dependants, skills, networks, health and plausible alternatives. A good diagnosis distinguishes a temporary frustration from a deeper pattern. Write the current situation in two sentences and identify what would count as progress.

Use evidence rather than assumptions

List what the next role must give you, what you can learn and what trade-offs are acceptable. Speak with people who understand your context, including those who may disagree with your first interpretation. Gather enough information to make a sensible next choice.

A Nigerian example

A project manager exploring consultancy could first run two paid pilot assignments during annual leave. The lesson is not that one method fits everybody. Local constraints such as household obligations, transport, access to mentors and financial risk affect how people should proceed.

Turn reflection into a small experiment

Instead of committing to an entire new identity, choose a two-week or four-week experiment. Specify the date, the person or group you hope to serve, a concrete action, the resources required and a measure of success. Keep the experiment affordable and reversible.

Review and adjust

At the end of the experiment, ask: What did I actually do? What response did I receive? What value did it create? Which assumptions proved wrong? What capability is missing? Delay irreversible moves until you have evidence. This turns purpose and growth into a learning process rather than an inspirational slogan.

Where coaching can help

A structured coaching conversation can help you articulate the decision, test your reasoning, identify blind spots and design accountability. Abuja Leadership Coach offers purpose coaching, leadership coaching and personal development support in Abuja and virtually across Nigeria. Coaching is not therapy, employment placement or a guaranteed outcome.

Three questions for your journal

  1. Which decision have I postponed because I want more certainty?
  2. What low-risk experiment could provide evidence within the next 30 days?
  3. Who can offer honest feedback on my contribution and progress?
