Passion is an experience of interest or energy; purpose is a more durable decision about contribution. For Nigerian professionals, founders and organisational leaders, the most useful response is a practical combination of reflection and action.
Start with the actual problem
Passion is an experience of interest or energy; purpose is a more durable decision about contribution. Identify work you care about even when it is difficult or repetitive. A good diagnosis distinguishes a temporary frustration from a deeper pattern. Write the current situation in two sentences and identify what would count as progress.
Use evidence rather than assumptions
Ask who benefits from your effort and how you can know if your contribution helps. Speak with people who understand your context, including those who may disagree with your first interpretation. Gather enough information to make a sensible next choice.
A Nigerian example
A founder may enjoy technology but find a deeper reason to improve learning outcomes for school owners. The lesson is not that one method fits everybody. Local constraints such as household obligations, transport, access to mentors and financial risk affect how people should proceed.
Turn reflection into a small experiment
Instead of committing to an entire new identity, choose a two-week or four-week experiment. Specify the date, the person or group you hope to serve, a concrete action, the resources required and a measure of success. Keep the experiment affordable and reversible.
Review and adjust
At the end of the experiment, ask: What did I actually do? What response did I receive? What value did it create? Which assumptions proved wrong? What capability is missing? Use enjoyment as a clue, not as your only compass. This turns purpose and growth into a learning process rather than an inspirational slogan.
Where coaching can help
A structured coaching conversation can help you articulate the decision, test your reasoning, identify blind spots and design accountability. Abuja Leadership Coach offers purpose coaching, leadership coaching and personal development support in Abuja and virtually across Nigeria. Coaching is not therapy, employment placement or a guaranteed outcome.
Three questions for your journal
- Which decision have I postponed because I want more certainty?
- What low-risk experiment could provide evidence within the next 30 days?
- Who can offer honest feedback on my contribution and progress?
